The first qualifying session of the busy July schedule in Formula 2 ended with the American Logan Sargeant on pole for the first time in his F2 career. Championship leader Felipe Drugovich will start in third-place for Sunday’s Feature Race, while reverse-grid pole for the Sprint on Saturday is Prema’s Jehan Daruvala.

An exciting qualifying session saw a number of lead changes throughout. Ultimately, Carlin were the pick of the bunch, with both cars consistently in the top five. However, Liam Lawson didn’t have a successful final flying lap and couldn’t improve from fifth. Nevertheless, Logan Sargeant made up for this with a dominant performance leaving him head and shoulders above all others.
Sargeant and Silverstone: a love story
After the session, F1 Feeder Series spoke to the new American polesitter about his qualifying battle with his teammate, as well as his connection to Silverstone.
“He’s been extremely quick all year and I’m sure he’s going to be fighting for more podiums and wins, but that’s what I’m going to try and do as well.”

“He’s been extremely quick all day as well”, Sargeant said about teammate Lawson. “He just didn’t quite hook it up in qualifying. I’m just trying to do the best job that I can and if that leaves me in front on him then it does. He’s been extremely quick all year and I’m sure he’s going to be fighting for more podiums and wins, but that’s what I’m going to try and do as well.”
Despite being American, the love for Silverstone is certainly with the Carlin driver. Sargeant’s experience with the historic circuit is one of joy and that extends for the British fans on race week.
“From my side, I just enjoy every single lap that I get around here. I feel like they don’t come that often. I just love it. It’s one of my favourite circuits on the calendar and I’ll keep enjoying the next couple races. I think the crowd here is always mega and I expect it to just get bigger and bigger throughout Saturday and Sunday. They definitely put on a show.”

Feeling the support
Sargeant isn’t the only one on the grid that enjoys the home of British motorsport. Both Frederik Vesti (P2) and Felipe Drugovich (P3) also share these feelings. Speaking to us, the pair expressed their experience with the British crowd.
“It’s one of the better weekends of the year”, said Danish ART driver Frederik Vesti. “Now I live in the UK, so I sleep at home which is pretty cool. It’s the only time I can do that for the whole year, so that’s a good experience. The fans are crazy here. It’s the heart of F1 here in Silverstone and it’s clear to see that everyone is motivated for the weekend. It gives good energy.”
“I think on Sunday it’s going to be real crazy and I’m going to enjoy it.”
Felipe Drugovich
“For me too it’s my favourite track of the season”, championship leader Drugovich agreed. “I really enjoy driving here and the fans are just amazing as they have been for all the past years. I think on Sunday it’s going to be real crazy and I’m going to enjoy it.”
Prema driver Jehan Daruvala will start on pole for the Sprint Race on Saturday afternoon, searching for his first win of the season. The Feature Race on Sunday will start at 10:05am BST (11:15am CEST).
