GB4 Champion Nikolas Taylor: ‘I saw the chequered flag, it was pure relief’

Nikolas Taylor was crowned the 2022 GB4 champion last weekend at Donington Park, becoming the first ever winner of the series. F1 Feeder Series caught up with him after sealing the Drivers’ Championship.

With nine race victories and a further five podiums, Taylor beat championship rival Max Marzorati with a comfortable advantage. Mazorati was unable to claim a race victory throughout the season, however, the Hillspeed driver was super consistent, failing to finish inside the top six on only two occasions which included ten podiums.

Despite the GB4 Championship being new for 2022, Taylor knew that he was going to be right in the title battle from the very start.

“Going into the Championship, we knew we would be quick and all of the hard work that me and the team have done this season has really paid off. I didn’t make it easy but they’ve put up with me for the full season and I’m thankful for that.”

With Race 3 ending under safety car, it allowed Taylor some time to process what was about to happen, but he didn’t feel totally at peace until he took the chequered flag.

“I knew there was a big shunt and we had like five minutes left to go and I didn’t know if we were going to restart. Once it said on the pitwall that we had one minute left, one more lap under safety car and I saw the chequered flag on the next lap it was just pure relief.”

The ‘Donington Decider’ was somewhat difficult for Taylor despite his title success with the newly-crowned Champion reflecting on that and believing that performances earlier in the season could have made his title win even easier.

“My performances this weekend hasn’t really reflected our pace.  I think throughout the season we could have got a few more podiums but that is just building up the experience.”

Alongside winning the Championship, Taylor also takes home the top prize of £50,000 that will undoubtedly go towards next season’s racing. F1 feeder Series asked Taylor if he knew where he would be racing next year:

“Not yet but it is all budget related, I think that GB3 is the best option.”
