Feeder Series weekend preview and schedule: 16–18 May

Gear up for one of the busiest weekends of 2025 in junior single-seaters with our comprehensive guide on what to watch for in 12 series racing in Europe, Asia and North America.

By Feeder Series

The headline series included in our coverage, Formula 2 and Formula 3, return this weekend at Imola alongside F1’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. And while the rounds mark the start of three consecutive weeks of action for them, it could also be their final outings at Imola, which is not under contract for 2026.

If you enjoy following the tier of European single-seater racing below F3, you’re in for a treat this weekend: all four of the major championships are competing. While FR Europe and Euroformula Open take on the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, GB3 crosses the English Channel for the first time this year for a visit to Zandvoort, while Eurocup-3 gets underway after a turbulent off-season that saw the championship litigated in FIA courtrooms. The Central European Zone F4 series joins Eurocup-3 for its second round in a row in Spielberg.

Several Asian and American junior single-seater series are also racing. Super Formula Lights heads to the island of Kyūshū for its second round at Autopolis with several driver swaps, while even more changes affect the Chinese F4 grid, which has reached a record size of 28 for the series’ visit to the Shanghai International Circuit. And at Road America in Wisconsin, FR Americas, F4 US and the Ligier Junior Formula Championship will each hold their second rounds too.

Though not covered in depth by Feeder Series’ editorial department, an additional championship taking place this weekend is SMP F4, which holds a full season for the first time since 2019. For this weekend’s round at Moscow Raceway, 15 drivers are set to take part, including Italian F4 and Formula Winter Series drivers Artem Severiukhin and Kirill Kutskov.

Reports for the five East Asian and North American series will be published Tuesday morning instead of Monday morning, when the European series’ weekend reports will be released. Until then, read on to find out what to watch for in each series and how to watch them all – no matter where in the world you are.

What to know: Formula 2’s fourth round in Imola marks the start of its European leg, which will keep the series on the continent through September. Imola is also the first round of a three-week stretch that includes the Monaco and Barcelona rounds.

Richard Verschoor enters the weekend as the championship leader after a dominant round in Jeddah, where he won the feature race and finished the sprint first before receiving a five-second penalty. He leads Pepe Martí in the standings by 12 points, with Leonardo Fornaroli a further point behind.

Verschoor was strong at Imola last year, scoring points in both races, while Joshua Dürksen took his first podium in the feature race. Fornaroli and Verschoor’s MP teammate Oliver Goethe both stood on the feature race podium at Imola in F3 last year, with Goethe also taking sprint victory.

In the teams’ championship, Campos leads MP on 65 and 59 points apiece.

What to know: Alongside F2, Formula 3 lands in Europe for the first time in 2025, with the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari hosting round three of the season. Home favourites Trident lead both the drivers’ and the teams’ standings, and last season, they secured a historic 1-2-3 here in qualifying before Sami Meguetounif won them the feature race.

Championship leader Rafael Câmara knows this track especially well, having raced and won here in both FRegional Europe and Italian F4. With his lead in the standings already up to 26 points, main rivals Tim Tramnitz and Callum Voisin will have to rely on their F3 experience from 2024 to make up some ground.

Other than Câmara, four other drivers on the grid have won a single-seater race in Imola. Martinius Stenshorne and Alessandro Giusti are previous winners at the FR level, while Ugo Ugochukwu and Nicola Lacorte did so in Italian F4.

Two new drivers are expected to be on the grid in Imola, both with AIX Racing. Reigning Euroformula Open champion Brad Benavides, who raced for Carlin in 2022, steps into car #28 for the rest of the season, taking over the seat that had been temporarily filled by Nikita Bedrin and Freddie Slater in rounds one and two respectively. In car #26, meanwhile, James Hedley takes over from 2024 Eurocup-3 runner-up Javier Sagrera from Imola onwards after the Spaniard parted ways with the team.

From the press: F3 sophomore Callum Voisin has started this year off strong with three points finishes from four races, including a podium in the feature race in Bahrain. The Rodin Motorsport driver discussed the start of the 2025 season and how it differed from his and the team’s struggles in the first half of last year. Read what he said here.

What to know: After a one-week break, Formula Regional Europe comes back for its second round of the 2025 season. This time around, the grid heads to the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, a track that has been part of the series’ calendar since 2021.

Evan Giltaire came out of the first round at Misano atop the drivers’ standings on 43 points by taking second place in race one and victory in race two. Following the Frenchman closely in the standings is Matteo De Palo, whose memorable maiden FR Europe win in race one and third-place finish in race two put him second in the championship with 40 points. Giltaire’s FR Middle East title rival Freddie Slater is fourth after he retired from race one of the first round and had to settle for second in race two.

As was previously announced, Valerio Rinicella will not rejoin CL Motorsport for the second round of the championship as he begins his Eurocup-3 campaign with MP Motorsport, whom CL replaced in the series. In his stead, as Feeder Series previously reported, Macéo Capietto will represent the Italian-based, Chinese-run squad, with FR Europe veteran Michael Belov newly announced to be joining him. It is still unclear whether Zachary David will contest the campaign with CL, as was announced in December last year, with his focus presently on this weekend’s Super Formula Lights round.

What to know: Earlier this year, MP Motorsport’s Maciej Gładysz came out on top in the Eurocup-3 Spanish Winter Championship ahead of 2024 Spanish F4 champion Mattia Colnaghi. This weekend, Eurocup-3’s main season gets underway at the Red Bull Ring for the first of eight rounds. This year’s calendar features multiple changes to the line-up of circuits, including the championship’s debut at the TT Circuit Assen and its return to the Autodromo Nazionale Monza.

Every team who competed in the winter series will continue in the main season, as do most of their line-ups. Get up to speed on everything that you need to know about Eurocup-3’s 2025 season in our season guide here, and follow Feeder Series editor Finjo on X for updates from the Spielberg paddock.

  • 11:10–11:35: Race 2
  • 16:15–16:40: Race 3

How to follow: All races will be available to watch on the MSV TV YouTube channel. The stream will also be shown on the GB3 website and Facebook page. Live timing for all sessions is available through the GB3 and GT World Challenge Europe websites.

Weather forecast: Partly cloudy Friday and Sunday; clear skies expected Saturday.

What to know: GB3 heads to Zandvoort this weekend for its first of four mainland Europe rounds, though points leader Freddie Slater will be absent to compete in FR Europe.

Having dominated last time out at Silverstone, Slater leads the championship by 15 points over JHR Developments’ Noah Lisle, who took two second-place finishes in round one, and 27 over Nikita Johnson, who won race three at Zandvoort last year.

Rodin Motorsport’s drivers also all scored top-six finishes in both of the first two Silverstone races, though a triple retirement in race three hamstrung them in the standings.

Rodin’s Alex Ninovic won at Zandvoort last year in British F4, as did eventual champion Deagen Fairclough, who claimed two victories and a third place from 12th.

Currently 14th in GB3, Hitech’s Fairclough can kickstart his title challenge at an ‘abrasive’ track that he told Feeder Series would be ‘really enjoyable’ with GB3’s new cars.

Six drivers from Silverstone, plus Chris Dittmann Racing’s Rashid Al Dhaheri, are set to miss the second round of the GB3 season as it clashes with the FR Europe round at Spa-Francorchamps. In addition to Al Dhaheri, Dion Gowda of Xcel Motorsport and the Hillspeed trio of Slater, Hiyu Yamakoshi and Kanato Le are all prioritising their FR Europe campaigns and leaving their GB3 seats vacant for Zandvoort. Whilst Hugo Schwarze was confirmed at the eleventh hour for round two, his VRD teammate Enzo Tarnvanichkul will not be at Zandvoort, instead racing in Eurocup-3 in Austria.

Mika Abrahams of Fortec Motorsport will also miss the round, while Divy Nandan’s switch to JHR Developments leaves Chris Dittmann Racing with no cars for the weekend. The 19-car total makes for the smallest field in the series since 17 cars raced in the penultimate round of 2021 at Oulton Park.

Weather forecast: Sunny Friday. Cloudy Saturday and Sunday, with a risk of light rain on Sunday.

What to know: Following a two-week break, Euroformula Open will return for its second round at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, a mainstay in the series since 2008.

Team Motopark’s Yevan David comes into the Belgian round as the points leader, having won races two and three at Portimão in April. Just 10 points behind him is teammate Michael Shin, who finished second in all three races, while 12 points behind the South Korean sits Nielsen Racing’s Edward Pearson. The Briton won the first race of the season, taking Nielsen Racing’s maiden junior formulae win on their debut, and also finished third in race two.

BVM Racing’s Tymek Kucharczyk, who dominated all the early weekend sessions and took pole for race one, stalled in the first two races, costing him valuable points. He is fourth in the points, having capped off the weekend with a third-place finish in race three.

For the first time in six years, dating back to the Hockenheimring round of the 2019 season, there are no changes to the entry list from one round to another, with all 12 drivers and cars from Portimão returning for Spa.

  • 12:15–12:45: Race 3

How to follow: All races will be live streamed on the series’ official YouTube channel. Live timing will be available at sfl.racelive.jp.

Weather forecast: Cloudy all weekend, though rain is expected Friday evening into Saturday morning between on-track sessions.

What to know: Super Formula Lights enters its second round at Autopolis this weekend. TOM’S driver and Toyota junior Yuki Sano triumphed in all three races at the opening round at Suzuka, although he only won the second and third on track. B-Max Racing’s Yuto Nomura crossed the line first in race one but received a five-second time penalty for a jump start. The Honda junior then came second in the second and third races.

Based on precedent, Autopolis, located in Ōita Prefecture on Kyūshū in the very south of the country, offers a level playing field for frontrunners TOM’S and B-Max Racing given the lack of testing there. The battle between Nomura and TOM’S drivers Sano and Rikuto Kobayashi – who impressed in his Super Formula debut last month – can be expected to continue, though international drivers Kaylen Frederick and Zachary David looked strong on the first day of practice, topping both sessions.

There are three changes to the grid for the Autopolis round. Delightworks Racing will continue to bring two of their four cars to SF Lights, but they will field Yugo Iwasawa in place of former Honda and Red Bull junior Souta Arao. Team principal Masato Shimoyama confirmed to Feeder Series that Souta Arao was no longer part of the team, stating that the reasons for the split “were not related to driving performance but rather to other aspects that made it difficult to continue [the] collaboration”.

At JMS Racing Team, B-Max’s satellite outfit, team principal Nobuhiro Imada will return after having missed the opening round because of a finger injury. Tosei Moriyama, who replaced Imada at Suzuka, will not return, but his stand-in performance impressed Imada so much that he gave the 22-year-old a Japanese F4 seat with the team.

At TOM’S, Esteban Masson returns having likewise missed the opening round because of an injury. He was initially replaced by Seita Nonaka, but on short notice, Nonaka was called up to stand in for Oliver Rasmussen at Team Impul in Super Formula, which meant that the #36 car did not take part in SF Lights’ qualifying sessions or races at Suzuka.

Report by Finjo Muschlien

Nomura versus Sano versus Kobayashi is shaping up to be the championship battle in 2025 | Credit: Super Formula Lights

From the press: With Nonaka already replacing Kamui Kobayashi at KCMG last time out at Motegi, Toyota called up Rikuto Kobayashi to fill in for Team Impul’s Rasmussen, who was still recovering from injury. The 19-year-old impressed on his Super Formula debut, even outperforming several series regulars. Read what he told us about the experience here.

  • 15:10–15:35: Race 3

How to follow: Every race will be streamed live on F4 CEZ’s YouTube channel.

Weather forecast: Partly cloudy Friday. Light rain possible throughout Saturday and Sunday.

What to know: F4 CEZ enters its second round of 2025 at Spielberg with a number of driver changes on the horizon – including the departure of the current championship leader.

At the opening round of the season last month at the same track, Bart Harrison won the first two races and finished third in the final race to lead the standings by 11 points over Jenzer Motorsport teammate Gino Trappa. But with Harrison missing this round, Gino Trappa is in prime position to take the points lead this weekend after having finished second in all three races last month.

The Argentine driver is currently 11 points behind the Briton and 24 points ahead of the next highest-placed returning driver in points in Max Karhan. The Czech driver, who finished third in the points last season, currently sits fourth in the standings with a best result of fourth last time out in race three.

In addition to Harrison, the other absentees are Real Racing’s Luca Viisoreanu, the winner of race three last time out, and Jenzer’s Teo Schropp, who is currently ninth in points.

Renauer Motorsport is the only team running a new driver this weekend in the form of William Karlsson. The Swede was originally set to race in the series back in 2023 for the Austrian team but switched to Eurocup-3 before the season got underway. The team’s partnership with Liechtenstein-based gold trading firm TGI AG has enabled them to run a third car for the Swede, who works for the team as a driver coach alongside his LMP3 commitments with Team Virage.

Feeder Series will also make its debut as media in the F4 CEZ paddock this weekend courtesy of editor Finjo, whom you can follow on X for updates.

Weather forecast: Mostly sunny Friday and Saturday. Cloudy Sunday.

What to know: Chinese F4 holds its second round of 2025 this weekend at the Shanghai International Circuit with a record 28-car grid that includes five drivers making their debuts in the series.

Having taken three wins from four in the first round at Ningbo four weeks ago, Zhang Shimo enters Shanghai with a 22-point lead over single-seater newcomer Kimi Chan of Champ Motorsport. One point further behind is Ningbo race two winner Ryan Liu, though he will not compete in this weekend’s event. Seventeen-year-old Xu Yingjie, a winner on debut in 2023, will replace the 2018 China GT champion at Black Blade Racing.

Liu is one of a number of drivers absent from the grid for the series’ second round, though the 10 additions bring the grid to its largest-ever size of 28. At Black Blade Racing’s sister team Black Blade GP, Mi Qi replaces Zhang Jun, while at Venom Motorsport, series newcomer Yu Yan takes the place of Midnight Hurricane, who started from reverse-grid pole in races two and four. Huang Chujian also replaces Li Zebing at the Asia Racing Team–run Apollo RFN Racing Team entry.

At GYT Racing, 2023 third-place finisher Jing Zefeng, also known as Jacky Jing, replaces masters class driver Xu Dan, while Team KRC will swap drivers within the masters class as Wu Jiaxin replaces Richard Lin. Joining the class for this round is Zhu Zhenyu of Happiness Racing, a pairing that competed in three rounds last year.

Three additional drivers join the grid as part of new team entries. Pointer Racing will field Liu Taiji and Yuanyang Zeshi, both series newcomers. Additionally, Shi Wei joins Geeke ACM Racing for her first round in single-seaters since being a wild card in the F1 Academy round. That event supported the Chinese Grand Prix and effectively replaced the Chinese F4 season opener originally scheduled to take place there on the F1 grand prix weekend.

What to know: After a six-week break, FR Americas is back for its second round at Road America this weekend.

In the last round of FR Americas, Nicolas Ambiado stole the spotlight by securing pole, one win and two second-place finishes, leaving NOLA with a 15-point lead in the standings. Rookies Bruno Ribeiro and Brady Golan also impressed in the opening round. Golan claimed his first win in the series, while Ribeiro stood on the podium twice. Golan has also since stepped up to USF Pro 2000 on the IndyCar ladder after beginning the year in USF2000.

For this round, the grid will have two fewer drivers compared to NOLA, with Jensen’s Jake Pollack and Kiwi Motorsport’s Nicole Havrda, who has other driving commitments this weekend, both not joining for this round. With Pollack’s absence, fellow Jensen driver Athan Sterling will instead race with #1.

While not on the entry list for this weekend, LMP3 driver Garett Grist also took part in the optional tests on Thursday. The 30-year-old was a race winner in Pro Mazda and USF2000 in the mid-2010s and is now affiliated with Toney Driver Development.

From the eight-driver grid, four split the podium finishes in the last round of F4 US. Alex Popow, Kekai Hauanio and Cooper Shipman all stood out in NOLA, with Popow winning two out of the three races and finishing third in the other and Shipman placing second in all three races. Hauanio took victory in the season opener and third in race three, while Clemente Huerta also stood on the podium after the final race.

Though there will still be eight drivers racing this weekend, Conor Grant of Scuderia Buell is not on the entry list for this round. Toney Driver Development, however, has a new addition to the team in the 16-year-old karting graduate Luke Powers, who will race in single-seaters for the first time. What to know: The Ligier Junior Formula Championship holds its second round of the season this weekend at Road America.

As in the two series above it on the Parella Motorsports Holdings package, rookies took the spotlight in the last round of the newly rebranded Ligier Junior Formula Championship. Champagne Racing’s Gastón Irazú had the best run of all to secure two wins in NOLA, with returnee Drew Szuch winning one. Daniel Cará and Max Mokarem also stood on the podium, with Cará – new to the series but a podium finisher in F4 US in 2023 – securing pole.

For this round, Jensen’s Zach Fourie and Josh Griffith, who was only set for one race with the team, will not be racing, leaving Jensen without an entry for the weekend. Joining the grid, though, is Beckham Jacir, who will race with the LC Racing Academy outfit.

The 16-year-old from Miami, a Williams e-sports driver, raced in Formula FARA last year, in which he finished second. He also entered the final Ligier JS F4 round with the team last year but did not start any of the races. Beckham takes the place of Luca Day, who moves across from Leo Colman’s team to partner Mokarem at Momentum Motorsports.
