Exclusive: Juan Manuel Correa Rules Out F3 In 2022, Sets Sights On F2 Return

Sauber Academy driver Juan Manuel Correa is looking to get back to F2 as quickly as possible and doesn’t see F3 as an option for next year.

Correa was part of that horrific Formula 2 crash back in 2019 at Spa that unfortunately claimed the life of Anthoine Hubert. It was deemed a long shot at one time that Correa would be back in a car, but now he seems certain to return to F2: “I’m looking to get back in F2. At the moment, it’s a bit early to say that’s definite or if I will be looking at other options. F3 is not really an option for me.”

The ART driver understands that this year was just to get back into the swing of things: “I’ve come down here to do my first year, rehab and get back into racing but I don’t see a sense of doing another year in F3. I’m not getting any younger.”

Correa hopes to clean off his plate of any lingering injuries or race rust this year so he can mount a proper challenge next year in F2: “I’m focusing on myself. I am focusing on preparing for the 2022 season, as best I can. Between a few surgeries I have left still, this year, and just getting everything in order. Because I don’t want to have so much on my plate next year.”

Correa has high hopes for his future and being a part of the Sauber Academy has given him the confidence he needs to move up in his career; “They’ve bet on me once again. They have me in their programme which means they are following my progress. They are willing to help me in any way they can. They have a great new sim, they offered to allow me to use that. And also to help them with a bit of development. Even just from a confidence point of view it’s nice to be with them.”

The American driver hopes the faith the team has put in him can put him in a position for some F1 tests in the near future: “I love the team. I’m excited to soon really start, properly, working with them. And who knows, maybe in the future, we can talk about some more F1 tests or something exciting like that.”

Correa’s summer break comes to an end as F3 gets back under way at Spa-Francorchamps on the 27th of August.
