Luke Browning crowned GB3 champion: ‘I couldn’t be happier!’

Luke Browning is the 2022 GB3 Champion after finishing second in Race 2 of the weekend at Donington Park, with title rival Joel Granfors finishing down in 13th place despite taking an early lead. Browning spoke to F1 Feeder Series just moments after claiming the title and couldn’t contain his happiness.

“That was amazing, it was an incredible race. It was just nice to wrap up the title before the final race as sometimes that can be a carnage and I wouldn’t have wanted that. Luckily, I did enough in Race 2 and I’m happy for Hitech as well and I am looking forward to see where we go next.”

With five race wins and a further eight podiums across the season, Browning has been the class of the field. However, qualifying didn’t go his way at the ‘Donington Decider’ but with championship rival Granfors not taking full advantage, he had a good opportunity to clinch the title early.

After initially dropping down to sixth in the race, Browning quickly clawed back some positions before eventually finishing on the podium with the chequered flag surprising the newly-crowned champion.

“The last lap actually came earlier that I thought, so when I saw the pit board saying ‘P1 2022’ I thought that was amazing. I couldn’t be happier and a big congratulations to Hitech as well because they deserve it.”

Alongside winning the Championship, Browning has also won an FIA Formula 3 test. His current team Hitech and Carlin committed to offering the services of their car as part of the two-day test prize, something that he is very much looking forward to “The test is going to be amazing and FIA F3 has been a dream for a while.”

Despite there being a natural progression for many seasons from the British Formula 4 Champion to the GB3 Championship, or British F3 as it was previously known, Browning is the first driver to claim both titles.

“Being a British F4 and GB3 Champion is pretty amazing. It’s testament to all the hard work that we have put in and hopefully it will put me in a good position for the future.” All eyes will be on Browning as he conducts his F3 test, but despite being pressed on his plans for next year, he is keeping it on the down-low for now. “It’s all very secretive but fingers crossed we should be in a good place.”
